The relationship between a seeker and Spiritual Director is built on common faith, deep trust (which develops over time) and mutual respect. For my part as a spiritual director, the relationships with my directees while professional--are also warm and meaningful to who I am as a person and as a director. I learn a lot from those with whom I have this privileged relationship.
Spiritual Direction is not psychotherapy, yet it draws on the insights of psychology. It is not counseling, although it's bathed in pastoral compassion. Spiritual Direction will not provide specific answers to difficult decisions; rather, it will lead you deeper into a relationship with the One who holds the answer to all of life's questions. Spiritual Direction is the ancient practice of one disciple being an intentional spiritual companion of another disciple. It is a relationship which is mutually beneficial.
